Robert Paulus, 1155 Summer St. NE, (LL)

This house was built c.1920 for Robert and Juanita Paulus and they resided here until the early 1930s. Mr. Paulus was sales manager for the Oregon Growers Cooperative Association. Later residents were D.B. and Edith Jarman. Modifications in the front of the house include two glass-enclosed porches, relocating the front door. Present owners are restoring the house as it was originally.

Fritz Paulus, great nephew said...

Here is a little more history about Robert C. Paulus that I obtained from his obituary:

Robert C. Paulus was born in Salem in 1888 to his parents Christopher and Elizabeth (Nees) Paulus. Robert was the eldest of six brothers (Robert, Fred, George, William, Otto, and Theodore). A pioneer in the food processing industry, Robert and his brother George founded Paulus Bros. Packing Co. in Salem in 1925, which eventually became the largest cannery in the Northwest. His brother William also worked for the company as VP of Sales. During World War II, the cannery operated plants in Salem, Roseburg, Klamath Falls, and Emmett, Idaho and supplied canned goods to US troops. The company, eventually located at 14th and Oxford Streets in Salem and was later sold to the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (Dole -Castle & Cook) in 1957. Robert also served as a Director of the Dole Corp. from 1957-1970.

In addition to his business and civic accomplishments, Robert was a nationally recognized photographer and performed slide shows for various organizations throughout the United States. In 1972, he was honored by the Mission Mill Museum as one of thirty men and women who "helped to create the unique heritage of the Salem area." Robert passed away in Santa Paula, California , in 1986 at the age of 97.
