This lot was purchased by Jason Shenafield, a carpenter in 1904, and he is listed as living at this address in 1905. In 1909 Ludwig Gehlher purchased the property and lived there for about six years. Later owners in 1913 were Eugene and Martha Whiteside. In 1917 Margaret Edwards, widow of William H. Edwards bought the property and lived there for ten years. A later resident was Aaron Wells. Hawkins, 355 Lincoln Street S, (LL)
Harry M. Hawkins, a prominent Salem businessman, was the first owner of this Colonial revival house designed by Clarence Smith. Mr. Hawkins was at one time the owner of the Marion and Senator hotels in Salem and played a major role in the later development of downtown Salem. Later residents were William and Harriet Walton; Walton was a vice president of the Ladd & Bush Bank. Later residents were Fred and Elsa Schmidt, and R. L. and Jean Edwards.
