Franklin, 3960 Portland Road NE, (D)

In 1928 Orie F. Franklin and his wife Maude moved into their new home near the family business, Standard Cleaners and Dyers. The house was connected to Portland Road by way of foot and vehicle bridges over the Claggett Creek, but neither exists today. Orchards were planted to the south and children rode ponies in the woodlands behind the house on the seven wooded acres. Three generations of the Franklin family lived here until the sale of the property in 1967 to the present owner. See photograph of the house soon after it was built.

Stiff House, 885 Winter Street NE, (LL)

In 1928 this bungalow style house was designed by Clarence Smith for Hubert & Rose Stiff at 795 Winter Street. Mr. Stiff was the general manager of the H. L. Stiff Furniture Company.
The house was sold to Daniel & Edith Jarman in 1942; Mrs. Jarman continued to live there after her husband's death until 1966. At that time the State of Oregon bought the property. It was the residence of Governor & Mrs. Tom McCall & later the residence of Governor & Mrs. Victor Atiyeh.
The house was moved to its present site south of Mill Creek when the North Capitol Mall expanded. It is in the North Capitol Mall Heritage park.
